About Us
A Brief History

Old Well Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was founded in
August 1881 on a hilltop donated by the D.H. Spencer family. The
name of the church was chosen because the site was near a
crossroad called Old Well Crossing and the land was identified as
Old Well Hill. The original church was a one-room white frame
building. In honor of the church's dedication, President James A
Garfield, also a Disciples of Christ minister, sent a Bible that is still
on display in the narthex.
The original church building stood for 92 years, with several
changes and additions. Then, on May 21, 1972, the church held the
ground breaking ceremony for the brick structure that we worship
in today.  The building was dedicated at Homecoming Services on
August 19, 1973.
Old Well Christian Church has served the Spencer community for
over a hundred years. We continue to be a presence in the
community and bring ministries outside our own walls, so that we
can offer the hope and love of God to those around us

A Little Bit About the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)

As Disciples we affirm:

  • Jesus Christ is the son of the Living God
  • All persons are God's children

Our beliefs and practices include:

  • Open Communion - The Lord's Supper, or Communion,is celebrated weekly and  is
    open to all persons
  • Freedom of Belief - Disciples are called together around one essential of faith - belief in
Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Persons are free to follow their consciences guided by
the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study, and prayer and are expected to extend that freedom to
    others.
  • Baptism by Immersion - In baptism, the old self-centered life is set aside, and a new
life of trust in God begins. Although Disciples practice baptism by immersion, other
    baptism traditions are honored.
  • The Ministry of Believers - Both ministers and lay persons lead in worship, service, and
    spiritual growth.
